FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE:
Functional medicine is the underlying thought process that Gene Beavers, P.A. uses to identify patterns of health or disease. Functional Medicine is a science-based health-care approach that assesses and treats underlying causes of illness through individually tailored therapies to restore health and improve function.
The Principles:
Each person is an individual based on genetic and environmental uniqueness;
Patient-centered versus disease-centered;
Dynamic balance of internal and external factors;
Web-like connections of physiological factors;
Health as a positive vitality;
Not merely the absence of disease;
Promotion of organ reserve - health span.
Each person is an individual based on genetic and environmental uniqueness.
According to the functional medicine model each person is completely unique, with no two persons having the same genetics or the same environmental interactions. Therefore, each person will respond to the same stress, exposure, or infection in a unique way.
Beaver's role as a functional medicine practitioner is to look for the patterns that suggest a patient's body's areas of weakness, then to support them. This should bring about better function of the bodily systems and better health.
FIRST LINE THERAPY CLASSES:
A HEALTHIER YOU. This 12-week class is designed to be a stepping stone for a healthier lifestyle. Meet individual goals in a fun, interactive setting.
Gene Beavers, P.A.-C, and Melissa Weber, Registered Dietitian, lead this group. New class begins on January 16, 2007, and goes until April 3, 2007, each week on Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. Cost is $120 for the entire 12 weeks, or pay as you come for $15 each class.

Call 320-243-3000 to register or for more information on "A Healthier You."
BIO-IDENTICAL HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY:
Shari Heitke was a RN for 27 years prior to going back to school to become a nurse practitioner. She has worked for PAHCS for the past 10 years. Nursing in general has always been interested in health and wellness, and a large part of Shari's practice involves helping people, especially women, staying healthy and well.
About a year ago, she was asked by a patient about BHRT (bio-identical hormone replacement therapy). That got her interested in this type of replacement therapy so she started reading and attending a workshop to become more comfortable in its use. She became convinced that BHRT offers a much safer, better tolerated method of hormone replacement.
Shari, as well as many other health care providers, prescribed the synthetic or conjugated estrogens fairly frequently until the "Women's Health Initiative" study results were released in 2002. This study looked at Premarin and Provera. The study showed an increase of stroke and heart disease with their use. Since that time, she has looked for alternative treatment for menopausal symptoms. She feels BHRT offers a very safe alternative.
ACUPUNCTURE:
John Miley, Licensed Acupuncturist (L.Ac.), is licensed by the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice and is nationally certified by the NCCAOM (National Certification Committee for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine) for the practice of acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
John has been in private practice since 1999, after receiving his Masters in Acupuncture degree (M.Ac.) from Northwest Institute of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in Seattle, Washington. John's training involved three full-time academic years immersed in Traditional Chinese Medical studies, with over 2,500 academic hours and 900 supervised clinical treatment hours. Additionally, John completed a year of Chinese Herbal training through the Rocky Mountain Herbal Institute in Hot Springs, Montana.
John's personal interests in balancing mind-body energies offer his clients a fresh perspective in understanding their own health imbalances and provides them with tools they can use to work toward implementing preventive health care into their daily lives.
At the Center for Health and Wellness, we use TCM to address health imbalances such as migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, acute and chronic pain (i.e. back, neck and shoulder pain, knee pain, arthritis), women's health issues (including infertility, menstrual complications, menopausal symptoms), depression, and many other health concerns.
Because each person receives an individual assessment, they will also receive an individualized treatment plan and protocol. Generally, one would notice improvement in their health within four to eight treatments. Some acute conditions respond immediately, but a series of treatments allows both the practitioner and patient time to see how the treatments are impacting a patient's overall health picture. Initially, office visits take between 60 to 90 minutes, with repeat visits varying lasting approximately 45 minutes. Please call or e-mail us for pricing information.
If you have questions related to how acupuncture and TCM may benefit your specific health needs, give us a call, and we will be happy to discuss your case with you.

YOGA AND STRESS REDUCTION CLASSES:
Dana Spates is a Registered Yoga Teacher, RYT, who also has a Masters of Science in Natural Health. She offers heart centered instruction for beginning and advanced yoga students as well as Stress Management classes at the Center for Health and Wellness.
Why Practice Yoga? People are drawn to yoga for a number of reasons. Some simply want to become more flexible, some come to relax, and some come to learn to breathe more efficiently. These are all good reasons to come to yoga. Most will agree that you also take away from the classes a better understanding and appreciation of your body and an improvement in your ability to quiet your mind and focus.
Current Schedule:
Monday, 6:30 - 7:45 p.m. and Wednesday, 7:00 - 8:15 p.m. Vinyasa flow yoga: This is a more challenging yoga series utilizing Sun Salutations and Vinyasas to link hatha yoga postures.
Thursday, 4:00 - 5:15 p.m. Gentle Yoga: This class is suitable for all levels and uses only modified half sun salutations. In this class we especially encourage the use of blocks, straps, and blankets to modify any pose that gives the student difficulty.
Introduction to Yoga: If you have been thinking about trying yoga, don't put it off any longer. You've read about the health benefits, you've heard people talk about it, now is your chance to experience. it. Class limited to 10 people. Please call 320-243-3000 or 320-266-5476 to register or for more information. Be sure to leave your name and phone number so that we can get back to you.
In all classes we encourage a strong use of breath, and maintaining a safe, noncompetitive, nonviolent practice.
All classes are $36.00 for a six-week session one day a week, or $60.00 for a six-week session two days a week, or $7.00 pay by the time. We offer a punch card for Saturday mornings for $36.00 for six classes.
Drop-ins are always welcome!!!!!!!!!
Stress Reduction Classes: These classes are taught about every three months. It is a five-hour class split up into two nights of 2 1/2 hours. The focus of this class is to introduce you to techniques such as Soft Belly Breathing, Guided Relaxation, Biofeedback, Walking Meditation, Journaling, Shaking and Dancing, and much more.
Cost is $40 for both nights. It is hoped that people will find one or more techniques to incorporate into their life to help deal with the stress one cannot reduce in life. Everyone deals with some form of stress and knowing that stress is a factor in more than 80 percent of disease. It is essential that we all learn techniques to practice to reduce the effects of stress on our physical and mental health.
