PET/CT
What is it?
Positron Emission Tomography (PET Imaging) is available at Paynesville Area Health Care System. PET Imaging is a diagnostic examination that involves the acquisition of physiologic images bases on the detection of radiation from the emission positrons. This technology will allow physicians to examine the whole body and be able to detect abnormalities that are not found by conventional x-rays or CT scans.
What is it used for?
One of the main reasons for doing PET Imaging is to detect cancerous tumors and to stage the progression of the cancer. It also is used in conjunction with cancer treatments; the physician can monitor, evaluate, and/or change the treatment as necessary. Some other things that it may be used for are: diagnosing Parkinson, Epilepsy, Alzheimer's, and coronary artery disease.
What will I experience during the procedure?
An IV will be placed in your arm. This is for the administration of the radioactive isotope. You will be expected to lay still for 1 1/2 to 3 hours depending on what exam is being performed. You will be asked to drink lots of water and not eat 4 hours prior to exam.
Check out this site on PET Imaging.
