PAHCS is pleased to offer Virtual Colonoscopy to help in the detection of colon cancer.
Procedure
Virtual colonoscopy uses a high-speed CT scan of the abdomen, allowing
radiologists to use computer graphics to see inside your colon.
This is a view of a colon with diverticula.
You will need a cleansing preparation of your bowel prior to the test, and
all the components are provided for you by PAHCS. The day of the test, you
will come to the radiology department for a CT scan. The procedure begins by
having a small flexible rubber tube placed in the rectum, so that CO2 can be
introduced. A CT scan is then performed while you are lying comfortably on
your back and then on your stomach.
The total time required for the study is approximately 15 minutes. Because
sedation is not required, you are free to leave the CT suite immediately
without the need for observation or recovery. A radiologist then analyzes
the CT data to detect colon polyps or cancers, and will contact you with the
results in 7 to 10 days.
Advantages
* Virtual colonoscopy is minimally invasive and does not carry the low
but real (1 in 1500) risk of perforation associated with conventional
colonoscopy.
* The screening is more comfortable and does not require sedation. You
are able to resume normal activity immediately following the procedure.

* Instead of spending a half to full day at a clinic, you can be in
and out in 30 minutes.
* The preparation involves a gentler laxative bowel cleansing and a
special diet. We supply you with a package of food and liquids you are
allowed to eat 24 hours prior to the screening.
* Virtual colonoscopy is significantly less expensive than
conventional colonoscopy. Currently, the rate for virtual colonoscopy is
$495.00, and some diagnoses are now covered by insurance. Ask your physician
for more information.
A physician referral is needed prior to the procedure.
