Dietary freedom - learn how!

The Paynesville Area Health Care System will be offering a FIT Rehabilitation and Group Education for Diabetes program on April 19-21 and 25-30 in Paynesville, Minn. Dr. Tom Sult, M.D.; Laura Odell, Pharm.D., CDE, and Kevin Odell Pharm.D., CDE will conduct the program.

Diabetes is a chronic condition where the patient makes 98 percent of all healthcare decisions outside of the clinical setting. The quality of life for many insulin dependent people with diabetes is impaired by rigid and sometimes oppressive insulin schedules and diets.

Functional Insulin Treatment (FIT) empowers people with diabetes to make safe and accurate decisions for all situations, while continuing to live as they wish. FIT Alumni have the freedom to feast or fast (with confidence) while maintaining near normal blood sugars, thereby reducing or eliminating the risk of acute and chronic complications.

FIT Alumni are independent, happy, and safe people managing their own diabetes. They are less of a burden on the health care system and can communicate with their health provider on a higher level because they are specialists in their own care.

Functional Insulin Treatment:
• Is a profound, empowering, modular group education and rehabilitation program, centered on patient choice.

• Produces results that meet or exceed the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT).

• Incorporates the principle of physiologically correct insulin substitution for fasting, foods, and blood sugar corrections. Provides group interactions where patients set individual goals to overcome obstacles in their life caused by diabetes.

• Teaches patients risks and rewards, cause and effects of insulin administration in tremendous detail to enable a freer lifestyle. Involves active patient participation in living exercises to differentiate the use of insulin according to its function, either for covering basal needs, or food intake, or for correction of hyperglycemia, on the basis of personalized rules or algorithms with the purpose of achieving near-normal glycemia while maintaining lifestyle flexibility.

• Was developed by the ISO 9001 Quality Certified International Research Group on Functional Rehabilitation and Group Education at the University of Vienna with the active participation and critique of 158 insulin dependent patients in 1981.
